29th January - 25th February

The Elephant in Tha Room Oh, I've been bad. I've been so bad. It is the 23rd of March and I'm writing about... Oh... Oh dear... That long ago? Everyone point and shame. It isn't lost on me that I let this slip only after my second instalment. But hey, you've gotta listen to me, I got married. Guh-guh-gasp! There's been so much prep work over the past couple of months. I touched down on the 11th and was busy since. Maybe I'll make a separate wedding post.

It's been a little under a month since coming back to the UK but I was majorly hit with that-- you know the feeling you get when you wake up from a nap but you're all yucky and warm and tired because fuck you? That's how I felt getting back into things. Plus side, major headway with my new Nekoweb site which, again, might need its own post. In leu of my inability to catch up on things, this post covers both the 29th of January to the 11th of February as well as the 12th of February to the 25th.

To summarise, I lost my Sporcle streak of 66 days, found this post, got my nails done wedding style, ordered the dress, touched down in Chicago, frolicked, was gifted an iPod, went to an expensive fondue place, went to a trinket fest hosted at a shuffleboard place, got a free shuffleboard game from the owner of the place, got lots of trinkets, hit tha doobie, got the rings, went sightseeing (I've seen almost all the big locations but I still love this city), made handmade soaps as favours, got real married for real, watched stand-up comedy with a friend that same night (and got called out a lot), big party town party central, Shedd Aquarium. Boom bap.

Commonplace Entries: I saw a video where a mum gave their toddler a picture-based recipe (e.g., a picture of the ingredient or utensil) and (mostly) prepared ingredients and let them at 'em, I thought that was pretty neat. Apply mascara sideways for manga lashes. Kids should be taught acceptable times to swear, not just the blanket, "do not swear." TOFU GUIDE: firm tofu is an all rounder that can be shredded, fried, whatever; soft tofu is best braised, getting firm on the outside while remaining juicy inside; silken tofu is great to blend into sauces or to substitute egg; smoked tofu is good for sandwiches, donors, and snacking. A floor bed inside a playpen sounds like the perfect infant zone. A well-cooked steak bite makes for a good solution to teething. I read about this interesting early potty-training strategy where you just hold your infant up to the toilet at scheduled intervals, some swear by it but I get the scepticism. What makes an infant listen to you? Asking them to show you their favourite thing/toy. 1 Grow onion peels at home with a jar, some water, some pocketful of sunshine.

Games I'm Playing

Spiritfarer I finally got around to grabbing all achievements. I did end up starting a new save because I beefed the old one at some point, but the game was fresh enough in my mind that I remembered the order of progression in a way that allowed me to catch up quite quickly. Feels good. French Canadians are sometimes alright.

OMORI I didn't have much else to do here, just defeating a really annoying Endgame boss and then completing the boss rush. Honestly, any excuse to play this game again. I usually have a hard time getting back into an RPG without restarting but I resisted. I mean, another playthrough wouldn’t hurt, but I’ve got a backlog. Needed these bosses crushed mega style. And crushed they were.

Dragon Quest XI I beat the Timewyrm because, yeah, I'm awesome. It took a lot of Pep Pop and Seed of Life farming but, as I basically go over in my [post about boredom](tab: https://taterinx.bearblog.dev/260202/), monotony (in moderation) keeps my mind fresh and awesome. I still have some outfits and casino related achievements I want to snag.

And you know what? I didn't play any games on my trip. I mean, I tried a bit of Once Upon A Katamari but I mostly poured myself into that the weeks after. That said, on the journey outbound, I did play a bit of Balatro (which never fails to make me feel like the world’s greatest dumbass loser), Vampire Survivors, and Animal Well; all the fun lightweight travel games. Hollow Knight convinced me that Metroidvanias can be worthwhile endeavours, so I gave Animal Well another shot. Such a gorgeous labour of love.

Media Treats

Art 1992 (Link) There's a lot of layers to this one. I really like Vibakari's comment pointing out, "The applause for the last piece of the night only for it to be revealed to be two rats absolutely devouring each other and the fact that it was item number 69 killed me."

kindness luigi (Link) I bet it's a wonderful life out there.

Serial Experiments Soprano (Link) Every couple of weeks, I'm given a reason to watch The Sopranos. Will I actually get around to it? Ahhh, gabagool.

Hello Kitty x Swarovski digital camera (Link) Eagle-eared viewers may find that the man behind the camera sounds familiar. Hm? Perhaps friendly. Perhaps smiling.

Daily Life with 1740 Water Bottles (Link) It's videos like these that make me realise I will never be a child prodigy or an extreme bits kid, which obviously means I've gotta end my shit or wait it out until I can be a middle-aged/senior extreme bits citizen.

&Extras: Cat Tucks Herself In To Bed (Link), Dog of Wisdom IV (Link), Morrisons for Nintendo 3DS Full OST (Link), Why is Dutch "funny"? (Link)2

Web Goodies

pixelcrash.xyz (Link) a web tool that creates a really awesome ASCII effect for videos. I haven't had a chance to play around with it too much but it looks crazy customisable.

spacetypegenerator.com (Link) an animated 3D (unsure of if it's legitimate or just masterful 2D rendering) type generator that doesn't run too smoothly on my laptop.

Footnotes

  1. You may have noticed that a lot of my commonplace entries surround childrearing or the family. For the record, I don't have any intentions of starting a family for the next couple of years. It isn't even a consideration in my mind until I'm past 25 years old. Still, I care a lot about that future so one of my commonplace books is exclusively for the family and home, for when that time does come.
